Non-custodial by default. Your wallet is a Safe smart contract (formerly Gnosis Safe) deployed to your chosen chains, and Tether is at most one signer on a multi-sig you control. On the Self-custody plan, we are not a signer at all — you set up the multi-sig yourself; we provide the UI. On Managed, we hold one key in HSM-backed KMS as a co-signer; we cannot move funds without your threshold. We can never unilaterally drain a wallet, and our co-signer key is rate-limited at the contract level.

Managed plan customers are covered up to $4M per wallet, per incident, under our Lloyd's of London syndicate policy. Aggregate annual cap is $48M. Covered events: smart contract exploit, internal Tether-side fraud or operator error, bridge counterparty default. Not covered: depeg events on the underlying stablecoin (we'll explain below), user-side phishing where the customer signs a malicious transaction, and force majeure (regulator-ordered freezes). Stablecoins: USDC, USDT, DAI, PYUSD, USDP, FRAX, sFRAX, sDAI. Chains (14): Ethereum mainnet, Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM, Base, Arbitrum One, Optimism, Linea, Scroll, zkSync Era, Mantle, Blast, BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche C-Chain, Solana. We add chains based on customer demand; latest additions go through a 90-day evaluation including audit review and TVL/decentralization assessment.

A stablecoin's peg is the issuer's responsibility, not Tether's — we are a treasury tool, not the asset issuer. That said, we surface peg deviations > 50bps in your dashboard within 8 seconds of the price feed update, and our auto-rebalance policy (opt-in) will swap a depegging stablecoin into a healthier alternative via curated DEX routes. We disclosed exactly what we did during the March 2023 USDC weekend in our post-mortem at tether.treasury/postmortems/2023-03.

SOC 2 Type II issued annually by Prescient Assurance, scoped to Security, Availability, and Confidentiality (we add Processing Integrity in 2026). The 12-month observation period covers all production systems, key ceremony procedures, and the on-call ops team. Current report is dated Feb 2026 and has zero exceptions.
