Duolingo gamifies vocabulary; you can't speak after a year. Pimsleur is audio-only and excellent for accent but slow on grammar. Babbel is solid for written exercises but rarely produces conversation. Synthetic, generated from a recording of a real native speaker who consented + is credited and paid royalties per conversation. The voice you hear as "Andrés" is built on hundreds of hours of recordings by a real Madrileño actor named Andrés Fuentes. We use modern voice models that handle prosody and regional intonation — most users tell us they couldn't tell within the first conversation, and the ones who could didn't mind.
Yes — Plus members can switch into an exam track for DELE (Spanish), JLPT N5–N1 (Japanese), DELF/DALF (French), HSK (Mandarin), and Goethe (German). The track replaces the default daily lessons with exam-aligned reading + listening + writing exercises, plus a final mock test with timing. About 14,000 of our members have passed an exam they prepped for on Sprout, JLPT N3 being the most common.
Plus members get a 7-day offline cache — lessons, listening exercises, vocab review all work without network. AI conversations require a connection (we run them server-side for latency), so you can't speak to Andrés mid-flight, but you can do everything else. Progress syncs the next time you're online.
Hindi is launching in July 2026 (already in beta with 2,400 members). Vietnamese and Greek are slated for Q4. Hebrew is being scoped.
