A short list. Each one earns its place.

ACTIVE

0.5% encapsulated retinol

Cyclodextrin-encapsulated to release over ~8 hours. Bioavailable at the dermis, far less irritating on the surface. Our 12-week panel reported 64% less stinging than free retinol at parity.

8h release · 64% less stinging
CO-ACTIVE

Niacinamide 5%

Improves the skin barrier, evens tone, and softens any retinoid flush. We dose at the clinical threshold — 5% is where the evidence is.

BASE

Squalane (olive)

Non-comedogenic, biomimetic, sourced from Spanish olives — not shark liver. Carries the retinol without occluding pores. Insanely tested for comedogenicity (0 of 30 panelists).

Four-week ramp-up

Your skin teaches itself to use this.

Retinol works because it triggers turnover. Going from zero to nightly causes the irritation that makes people quit. We slow that on-ramp until your barrier is ready.

"Encapsulation is the difference between recommending retinol and actually getting patients to use it."

"The reason most retinol patients quit at week three is irritation, not lack of efficacy. Solva's encapsulation flattens the irritation curve while preserving the clinical signal. It's what I send my patients home with when they don't want a prescription."

Forehead lines, week eight, gone-ish.

First retinol that didn't make me peel. Did the 4-week ramp exactly as the card says. Around week 8 the two horizontal lines on my forehead started filling in — I keep checking under different lighting and they really are softer.

My rosacea didn't flare. Astonished.

I've tried five different retinols. All triggered my rosacea within two weeks. The 0.25% encapsulated formula didn't. I'm at week 16 and using it three nights a week — the skin clarity I'm seeing is something I'd given up on.

Bumped to 1% after 3 months. Pores look smaller.

Was on 0.5% for the first bottle, no issues. Jumped to 1.0% — slight purging for the first 10 days, then it cleared. My T-zone pores are visibly tighter and my chin congestion is gone. Knock one star because the 1% bottle needs more pumps for the same coverage.

Bought it for my wife. Stole it for myself.

The skin on my jawline has been rough and slightly bumpy for years. After about six weeks it's smooth — like, I noticed shaving. Now I order two bottles a quarter.

First retinol experience. The instructions matter.

Decent product. Critically — read the ramp-up card. I went rogue and used it 4 nights in a row in week one and my cheeks flaked. Backed off, used the moisturizer sandwich method, fine since. No real visible changes yet but it's been a month.

Glass bottle, ungimmicky brand, real results.

I trust the packaging. Amber glass, sealed dropper that I don't need to open daily, no influencer-pink anywhere. The product is genuinely good and I appreciate that they publish the COA per batch.

FAQ

Questions a careful buyer asks.

Can I use this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding? +
No. Retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy and we don't recommend during breastfeeding either. Pause Solva when you're trying to conceive. Bakuchiol or peptides are the evidence-backed alternatives in that window — talk to your OB or derm.
How long until I see results? +
Texture and tone changes around week 4. Fine lines around week 8–12. Pigment around week 12+. Our trial measured at the 12-week mark; longer-term photos in our user gallery go to 9 months. Consistency matters more than dose — 0.25% nightly will beat 0.5% twice a week.
Is this comedogenic? +
Tested 0/30 on the comedogenicity panel (rabbit-ear method has been retired; we use a 30-day human in-use study instead). Squalane base is non-occlusive. If you're prone to closed comedones, start at 2× weekly and watch your chin.
Can I use this with my prescription retinol? +
Don't double up. Solva is a complete retinoid step; stacking tretinoin on top doubles the irritation without doubling the benefit. If you're prescribed Tret and looking to graduate or take a break, talk to your derm — Solva can be a maintenance product.
What's the bottle opacity — does it preserve the actives? +
Amber glass with a 99.4% UV-block coating. The dropper has a one-way valve — you don't expose the bath to air with every use. We measured retinol degradation at 0.4% over 90 days at 25°C, which is well inside the safety threshold. Refrigeration is unnecessary but won't hurt.
