How it works

Three nights and it starts knowing you.

No goal-setting, no "wind-down score". You answer a few things on day one and it adapts from there.

Track patterns without obsessing.

One small insight a week. No "sleep debt" number, no streak to ruin — just the thing that's actually moving the needle.

Wind-downs

Built for the bad nights, not just the easy ones.

If you only sleep 4 hours, Lumen knows. Tonight's program runs shorter, swaps in faster onset techniques, and drops the calm-narrator script we use when you're tired-but-fine.

  • Six wind-down protocols — 4-7-8 breath, body scan, progressive relaxation, NSDR, yoga nidra, cyclic sighing.
  • Eight narrator voices — Olu, Aoife, Marie, Ren, Ines, Kofi, Hana, Daniel. Pick the one that lulls you.
  • Drift-out timer — audio fades automatically when your phone stops moving for 6 minutes.

Sleep stories

Written by novelists. Read by people you'd actually trust.

240+ original sleep stories written by published authors, not scraped from public domain. Recorded in quiet booths with breath-sound editing, so nothing pops.

  • New every Friday. A new story drops weekly. Past stories never expire from your library.
  • Calm endings, no plot. Stories are intentionally low-stakes — a quiet evening at the lighthouse, not a chase scene.
  • Real voices, never AI. Every narration is a human in a booth. You can hear the difference.

One insight a week. Not a dashboard.

Lumen reads your sleep, but the weekly summary is one short sentence — the strongest thing it noticed. Because tracking should reduce anxiety, not become a new source of it.

  • No streaks, ever. Missing a night doesn't reset anything. Lumen isn't a duolingo for sleep.
  • Apple Health & Oura sync. If you wear something, we use it. If not, your own self-report is fine.
  • Export your data anytime. CSV or JSON. Your account, your sleep history, your call.

Reviews

Real reviews. We don't pay for these.

"I'd tried Calm and Headspace for years. This one finally got the assignment — it actually shortens when I'm exhausted instead of making me 'meditate longer'."

— Priya, Brooklyn

"Aoife's lighthouse story took me out cold on a transatlantic flight. First time I've slept on a plane in years."

— Marcus, Cape Town

"The 'one insight a week' is the move. I deleted three other tracking apps that were making me anxious."

— Hana, Tokyo

"As a parent of two under five, I needed a wind-down that's 8 minutes not 45. The short programs are why I stayed."

— Yusuf, Manchester

"Tried it after my second postpartum insomnia spiral. The lullaby protocols actually understand that 'go to sleep' isn't useful advice at 3 am."

— Ines, Lisbon

"The voices aren't trying to perform spirituality at you. Just calm humans. Olu could read a takeout menu and I'd be out."

— Jamie, Stockholm

FAQ

The questions sleep-deprived adults actually ask.

Does it work without headphones?

Yes. Every track is mixed for phone speakers too — we test on a 2018 iPhone, not just AirPods Pro. Some users actually prefer it: the soft speaker hiss adds a layer of ambient. For partners, there's a 'low-bedside' mix that drops the bass and EQs above 80 Hz so it carries less.

Can I use it offline on flights?

Plus members can download any wind-down, story, or ambient track for 30 days of offline playback. The Tonight program needs network for the initial build, but once it's built, the whole sequence is cached locally. Long-haul tested by our team flying SFO–SYD.

How does this compare to Calm or Headspace?

Calm and Headspace are libraries — you pick the thing. Lumen builds you a 30–90 minute sequence each night based on inputs about your day and (optionally) your wearable. We're smaller, focused only on sleep, and we don't ship daytime meditation, courses, or kids' content. If you want a broad mindfulness app, Calm is great. If you want one job done well at 11pm, that's us.

What's the cancellation flow?

Settings → Subscription → Cancel. Two taps. No retention screen, no "wait, here's 50% off!", no email gauntlet. App Store / Play Store cancellations work the same — and we don't charge for the remainder of your billing period, you just keep Plus until then.

Are the voices AI-generated or human?

100% human. Every narrator records in a treated booth in London, Brooklyn, or Tokyo. We considered AI for the long-tail languages but decided against it — the micro-pauses and breath patterns that actually help you drift off are exactly what synthetic voices miss. Each narrator is paid per session and credited.
